Legacy Software Reverse Engineering Services

When the original developers have left and the documentation no longer matches production, the system itself becomes the starting point. We investigate how legacy software works so your next change rests on evidence.

Recover the behavior that matters

Source code tells only part of the story. Database constraints, scheduled jobs, external APIs and manual workarounds can all carry business rules. We trace important workflows across these boundaries and compare what the code suggests with what users actually do.

The goal is a usable explanation of the system: which inputs drive a decision, where data changes, what depends on the result and which exceptions need to survive a migration.

A focused investigation, with clear questions

A useful starting question might be why two reports disagree, what a nightly import changes, or which rules determine an invoice. We agree on the business workflows and technical boundaries to investigate before expanding the scope.

Where access allows, we review code, database structure, integration contracts, logs and runtime behavior. Any production access should be agreed in advance. A constrained or unavailable environment becomes a documented uncertainty in the findings.

From findings to a change plan

An investigation can produce workflow notes, dependency maps, integration inventories, data-flow diagrams and tests that describe existing behavior. We distinguish observed behavior from assumptions and record the gaps that still need validation.

These findings can support an incremental migration, a safer extension or a decision to keep a component unchanged. If the system is being replaced, they also help define acceptance criteria that go beyond reproducing visible screens.

What to share for an initial assessment

Send a short description of the system, the problem you need to solve, the available documentation and whether code or a test environment can be made available later. Please avoid sending credentials through the contact form.

The free assessment is an initial opinion on the investigation path and likely scope. Detailed reverse engineering is normally a separate paid discovery engagement, with deliverables agreed before work begins.

Work directly with senior engineers

LegacyRefit offers remote consulting for teams in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and other markets. Meet the engineers and share your time zone when arranging a call.

An engineer will reply within 2 business days. Once we have enough context, we normally provide the initial assessment within 2 business days.
